Terms of use
Homestead has not had its general release yet. These interim terms cover the period until it does.
Why this page is short. The full commercial terms depend on the product licence, which is being settled with legal counsel. Rather than publish a document with the important parts left blank, this page states plainly what applies right now. The complete terms will be published at general release, and they will not apply retroactively to anything you do under this page.
What you may do right now
You may download Homestead, run the server on your own infrastructure, and use it with your team, for evaluation and for real work, at no charge. There is no licence key, no user limit and no time limit on this.
You may not sell it, offer it as a hosted service to others, or redistribute it as your own product. If you want to do any of those, write to us — the answer is quite possibly yes, it just needs an agreement that exists.
What we do not receive
Because you host it, your messages, files, calls and accounts stay on your server. We do not receive them, cannot read them, and have nothing to hand over if someone asks us for them. The privacy policy sets out the narrow exceptions — principally that the desktop app checks our server for updates, which your administrator can switch off.
No warranty, and what that actually means
Homestead is provided as it is, without warranty of any kind. In plain terms: we have built it carefully and we use it ourselves every day, but it is pre-release software from a very small company, and you should not deploy it somewhere a failure would be serious without satisfying yourself first.
Specifically, please keep your own backups of your database and uploads. We cannot recover data from a server we have no access to.
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss arising from your use of Homestead. Nothing here limits any right you have under consumer protection law that cannot be limited by agreement, and if you are in a jurisdiction where some of this is unenforceable, the rest still stands.
Security problems
If you find a vulnerability, please tell us at [email protected] before disclosing it publicly, and we will work on it promptly and credit you if you would like. We will not pursue anyone for good-faith security research on their own installation.
Third-party software
Homestead is built on open-source components, including Electron and mediasoup, each under its own licence. A complete attribution list ships with the application.
Changes
If these terms change, the revision date above changes and we will tell customers by email. When the full terms are published they will supersede this page for use from that date onward.
